Marmelade Fly (Episyrphus balteatus)

Line
The Marmelade Hoverfly (also known as Twin-barred Hoverfly) is not difficult to identify. Bear in mind that this is a rather small species, smaller than the 'usual' hoverflies you encounter. The remarkable fact about Episyrphus balteatus is that adult females often overwinter. With the most of hoverflies it is the egg, larva or pupa that overwinter, not the adult forms. This is migrating species and the adults travel to Southern Europe in autumn. They even cross the big natural barriers like the Alps to reach their home area for the winter time.
